Maureen Cavenaugh: For years environmentalists have been telling us that our lawns were living on borrowed time. The amount of water it takes to maintain beautiful expanses of green grass is just not sustainable in our semi-arid climate. That's what they've been telling us as we continued to plant lawns.

Now, that may be changing. Our increased population, together with ongoing drought conditions and a heightened awareness about environmental concerns are bringing more of us to the conclusion...those environmentalists are right. But, can an alternative landscape really be pretty? Can it be safe to play on? Will it make you like sitting out in the backyard? And how much does it cost to take your lawn out?
