Top California lawmakers say this could be the year Congress finally passes immigration reform. They spoke at a border issues conference on Capitol Hill. Tanya Snyder reports.
Los Angeles Congressman Xavier Becerra is encouraged by a meeting he and other Hispanic lawmakers had this week with President Obama.
“We dealt with only one issue, Becerra said. “And let me tell you -- to have 24 members talk about only one issue I believe was phenomenal. And that’s because we understand the importance of this issue -- and it was immigration.”
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi says even before reform happens, the Bureau of Immigration and Customs Enforcement needs to put an end to raids.
“ICE raids that break up families in that way, kicking in doors in the middle of the night, taking father away or parent away, it’s just not the American way,” said Pelosi. “It must stop."
Obama Administration officials have indicated that they may direct the agency to change course.
