San Diego County Supervisors will take another stab at figuring out how to build a better regional wild fire protection system. KPBS reporter Alison St John has more.
County Supervisors will decide today whether to hire consultants to draw up blueprints of a regional fire protection system
Ron Robert and Mayor Jerry Sander’s attempt to raise money for regional firefighting - Prop A - got more than 60% support last November, but it failed to get the two thirds needed to pass.
Retired San Diego city fire Chief Jeff Bowman says this blueprint approach is more likely to get voter support. " The Roberts/ Sanders plan, there was no plan. If you’re going to put a fire department together the first thing you do is this plan. Also, look at a phased approach because we know that the taxpayers are not likely to tax themselves again, the economy being the way it is, but at least if they vote for it they’ll know exactly what they’re paying for."
The County is looking at regional fire protection again, after opting out 30 years ago.
