Motorists Urged to Take Part in Affordable Insurance Program

State Insurance Commissioner Steve Poizner was in San Diego today to urge motorists to take part in an affordable automobile insurance program.

State Insurance Commissioner Steve Poizner was in San  Diego today to urge motorists to take part in an affordable automobile  insurance program.

The California Low Cost Automobile Insurance program provides eligible  good drivers with auto liability coverage at a fraction of the price of getting  it through a private company.

"In today's economy, many San Diego drivers are looking for ways to cut  their expenses and some are undoubtedly considering eliminating auto  insurance," Poizner said. "But driving without insurance is illegal and puts  all travelers at risk."

"I urge all San Diego motorists to shop around to find the best auto  insurance product to fit their needs," he said. "The Low Cost Auto Insurance  program is one affordable way for drivers to comply with the law and protect  all motorists from potential losses."

In San Diego, a policy through the state's Low Cost Auto Insurance  program costs $265 a year. Since the program was started here in 2006, 856  policies have been issued locally.

To be eligible for the program, applicants must have a good driving  record, meet certain income criteria and the value of the vehicle they want to  insure can't exceed $20,000.

Poizner, a Republican, has announced he is running to replace Gov.  Arnold Schwarzenegger next year.
