The San Diego homeless will get a helping hand on Wednesday when Project Homeless Connect takes place. Homeless people will be able to get haircuts, flu shots, dental care and legal aid. The event takes place Golden Hall, next to San Diego City Hall. But sponsors say they're still looking for donated items that homeless people can use.
“We're looking for gently-used jackets, for example,” said Cissy Fisher, the vice president of the San Diego Housing Commission. “Sleeping bags. Rolling suitcases. Basic things that people need to live on the streets in this weather.”
Fisher said people can drop off their donations at Golden Hall on Tuesday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. She added Project Homeless Connect is also looking for volunteers to help with the Wednesday event.
“We need a few more volunteers for child care,” said Fisher. “Our experience in the past is homeless families come to this event. So we need some people who can provide child care during the couple of hours that the family may be engaging with these service providers.”
Fisher said volunteers are also needed to help orient homeless people and show them what’s available. She said volunteers can just show up at Golden Hall at 8 a.m. on Wednesday.
