The union representing officers who oversee legal immigration to the United States says the Senate's immigration reform bill would make the current immigration system worse, not better.
The National Citizenship and Immigration Services Council released a statement Monday saying U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, the agency that processes immigration applications, has been turned into an “approval machine.”
Union President Kenneth Palinkas said the immigration reform bill would grant legal status to millions of people in the country illegally without correcting flaws in the current system.
He also expressed concern that the immigration reform bill wouldn’t allow for in-person interviews of people applying for legal status who overstayed their visas.
The union joins the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers union, which also opposes the bill.
Both groups say they weren’t consulted when the bill was drafted.
