UC San Diego announced Friday that it had made admission offers for the fall quarter to 25,552 prospective freshmen, who were selected from a record 73,437 applications.
The acceptance rate was 33 percent but the university said it anticipates enrolling a freshman class of 4,900 students since most of those accepted have multiple options.
The collective grade-point average of the accepted students is 4.13, up 0.02 from last year.
"We are proud to welcome this bright and dynamic group of students to UC San Diego," Chancellor Pradeep Khosla said. "As a student-centered public university, it is our goal to provide opportunities and a world-class education to these amazingly accomplished and talented students from diverse backgrounds."
Compared to last year, the number of accepted students who will be the first in their family to attend college rose 9.3 percent. The share of Latino students accepted rose 8.1 percent, according to UCSD.
UCSD offered admission to nearly 16,000 of the more than 52,000 Californians who applied, for a rate of about 30 percent. More than 43 percent of the 8,500 or so out-of-state students were accepted. The school also accepted more than 5,000 students from outside the U.S.
In the University of California system as a whole, 58 percent of applicants were accepted to nine campuses. The acceptance rates were 61 percent for Californians, 49 percent for out-of-state applicants and 57 percent for international students.
UCSD was the third-hardest UC school to get into, behind Berkeley, 17.3 percent, and UCLA, 18.2 percent.
The most popular majors chosen by the prospective freshmen at UCSD were biology, the social sciences and engineering.
