Black Student Justice Coalition Leader Reacts To Racial Profiling Reports

San Diegans React To Racial Profiling Reports

From Ferguson, Missouri, to the city of San Diego — the issue of racial profiling by police officers continues.

Although the San Diego Police Department doesn't believe a racial profiling problem exists locally, a coalition of college students disagrees.

Mark Jones is with the Black Student Justice Coalition, a group that held a silent protest during the San Diego City Council inauguration in December.

"We have to do something about that to change the culture of why these officers feel like they need to stop African-Americans and people of color more than they would anybody else," Jones said. "We don't want a Michael Brown case down here. We don't want some unarmed black man getting shot because there's a culture that permeates this type of behavior."

Jones' comments were made after the U.S. Department of Justice released a 100-page report this week that concluded there is systemic discrimination in the Ferguson Police Department and judicial system against African-Americans.

Earlier this week, San Diego police Lt. Scott Wahl said his department works to tackle bias by officers.

"Everybody has bias, and we provide training to our personnel that helps them understand bias and what our personal biases are, and make sure they do not become a part of how we police," Wahl told City News Service on Thursday.

Wahl did not return calls Friday for comment on Jones' remarks.
