Nearly 1,825 deaths in California were attributed to opioid overdoses in 2017, according to the California Department of Public Health.

Nearly 275 of those deaths were in San Diego County.

A new strategy by the Medical Board of California is pushing to decrease that number by targeting doctors who overprescribe opioids. But the program, called the “Death Certificate Project,” has had unintended consequences, said MedPage Today contributing writer Cheryl Clark.
