A child was wounded Friday in an apparent accidental shooting in a rural North County neighborhood east of Camp Pendleton, authorities reported.

The shooting in the 900 block of Santa Margarita Drive in Fallbrook was reported shortly after 1:30 p.m., according to sheriff's officials.

Medics airlifted the victim, believed to be 9 years old, to a hospital for treatment of injuries of undetermined severity. Her name was not released.

The circumstances of the shooting were unclear, Lt. Christopher May said. No arrests in the case had been announced as of mid-afternoon.
