Journey to Hawai'i's Kilauea volcano, which sent rivers of lava through communities and into the sea when it erupted in 2018.

Thousands of Hawaiian residents were uprooted when Kīlauea volcano erupted.

This frightening spike in Kīlauea’s activity transformed parts of the island paradise into a roaring inferno, spewing rock and causing massive destruction.

In "Kilauea: Hawaiʻi On Fire," NOVA follows scientists and local residents as they head underground to investigate the geological cause of the eruption.

Kīlauea: Hawaiʻi on Fire: Preview

In May 2018, Kīlauea volcano erupted, obliterating neighborhoods with devastating force and uprooting thousands of local residents. It is Hawaiʻi’s most destructive volcanic eruption in generations. How can one of the most beautiful places on Earth suddenly transform into a roaring inferno, sputtering molten lava and bombs of volcanic rock the size of refrigerators?

Along the way, discover how Hawaiʻi’s distinctive volcanoes formed in the first place, and what they tell us about the future of the island chain.
