Kaitlyn Greenidge, whose second novel "Libertie" is noted as one of the most anticipated novels of the year, is speaking Saturday during the second weekend of this year's virtual San Diego Writer's Festival.

"Libertie," follows the life of Libertie Sampson, a young Black girl living in post-Civil War Brooklyn. It's inspired by the real-life of Dr. Susan Smith McKinney-Steward, who was the third Black woman to earn a medical degree in the United States and the first in New York.

Throughout the novel, Greenidge explores the roles that race, gender and freedom play in the lives of her characters and the world in which they live.
