In a new book, a retired state lifeguard recalls the highlights and lessons learn from nearly 50 years in the profession.

The dream of being a lifeguard has captivated everyone from children at the beach to TV audiences.

As recalled in the new book "Stories from Sea Level," lifeguarding does in fact involve such heroics. However, it also has terror and tragedy, along with laughter, absurdity and a deep commitment to the people they serve.

Ed Vodrazka is the the former head lifeguard at Torrey Pines State Beach, and is just retiring from a career of 46 years as an ocean lifeguard.

He joined Midday Edition on Monday to reflect on his long career.
