The rush is on for a California Assembly bill that addresses learning loss suffered by students during the Ppandemic. AB-104, introduced by San Diego area Assemblywoman Lorena Gonzalez, has passed the legislature and is now awaiting Gov. Gavin Newsom’s signature.

Some of the bill's main provisions allow parents to request their child be allowed to repeat a grade and provide students with credit recovery options if the last year had a bad effect on their grades.

Gonzalez said she doesn't think we know the extent of the educational loss suffered by California students during the pandemic.

"Students in my district, which is of course the working class communities in south San Diego and Chula Vista and National City, had unique problems," she said. "Kids who lost parents and grandparents, we had kids whose parents were essential workers and so they were watching younger children as well at home, trying to do their schoolwork and be caretakers at the same time."

Gonzalez joined Midday Edition Wednesday to talk about the bill and what it would do.
