Park Chan-Wook Coming to Comic-Con

Vampires Korean Style

Web movie: thirst1

As a fan of Asian Extreme Cinema I was thrilled to discover that South Korea's Park Chan-Wook will be making his first Comic-Con appearance on Thursday July 23 at 6:30pm. He will be part of the Focus Features panel on Park's new vampire tale, "Thirst." The story involves a priest who submits to a medical experiment and emerges a vampire. Park discusses his take on vampires in the two videos from Focus Features. The film played to mixed reactions at Cannes earlier this year but the red band trailer looks promising, combining Park's bold visual style with some emotional weight. Park is one of my favorite South Korean directors. He was also one of the New Wave Korean directors who ushered in a run of homegrown box office hits at the start of the new millennium. But the films that won me over were his Revenge Trilogy: "Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance," "Oldboy," and "Lady Vengeance." Those audacious and sometimes heartbreaking explorations of revenge won me over. So I can't wait to hear what the filmmaker will have to say at Comic-Con and at a screening of the film on Friday night.
