Culture Lust Weekend: Quilts, Art Meets Surveillance, and Sushi

The Mingei International Museum opens an exhibit featuring fifty quilts made in the American South between 1910 and the 1970s. African American quilts, made entirely by women with no formal artistic training, are celebrated for their striking improvisation on traditional quilting patterns and use of recycled materials.

Artist David Forbes presents a new series of works that explore themes of code, space, geometry, and color in "Code-o-Chromes," at the Athenaeum Music and Arts Library. He has developed a technique using the unlikely medium of duct tape, a material he manipulates to create illusions of color and three-dimensional space.

This art opening looks pretty interesting. Artist Trish Stone has been inserting herself and her darkest secrets into the footage of public surveillance cameras by holding up a sign with her secret thoughts. A show of those images as well as a public installation opens at Art Produce in North Park on Saturday night. The project and show is called "Things I Never Say."

Food

If you've ever questioned just how many rolls of Sushi you could put away, this weekend is the time to see at the annual Sushi Eating Contest at Ichiban in Hillcrest.

Yes, yes, vegetables are good for you, but how to cook them so they taste good is always the question. Chef Jesus Gonzalez teaches students how to use the contents of their CSA boxes in daily cooking. The class will be held at Cups Lounge and Culinary in La Jolla.

Music

Put on your cowboy boots because Asleep at the Wheel and the Bayou Brothers are playing The Ramona Mainstage in Ramona. Drummer, David Sanger, and bassist, David Miller are both former San Diegans.

Anthology is offering up a few shows to check out in the coming days: Luscious Noise, a revolutionary classic music experiment, and singer-songwriters, Tift Merritt and Stephen Kellogg, who both consider themselves products of their parent's music collection.

May 15, 6 p.m. and May 17, 7:30

One-man-band Low Volts fills the Casbah with a slide guitar, kick-drum, and tambourines in a mix of rock, soul and blues. He (or they) as he often refers to himself, will be co-headlining with Little Hurricane.

Dance

The San Diego Dance Theater will be performing their annual Spring dance concert this weekend, featuring new work by local emerging choreographers, along with lighting, sets and costumes by SDSU design students.
