For the third straight year, Congressional Quarterly reported the border city El Paso had the lowest crime rating with population greater than 500,000 in America. Another border city, San Diego came in second.
This week, San Diego and El Paso both made headlines as the two cities Janet Napolitano visited during her two-day border tour. She cited them as examples of border security successes.
In San Diego, Napolitano cited federal figures showing apprehensions of illegal border crossers were down 50 percent since 2008.
Both San Diego and El Paso’s sister cities across the border have seen a significant drop in violence this past year as well.
Congressional Quarterly calculated the crime rates from the FBI Uniform Crime Reporting (UCR) 2011 data.
