El Cajon wants to give its 18-acre Wells Park a makeover and the city needs the public’s ideas to get the job done.

El Cajon’s recreation department is trying to win a $5 million grant from the state to revamp the 40-year-old park. The city’s Sara Ramirez says the grant application requires the rec department to get specific public input about the project.

“Part of the grant is that we need to go out to our community and say, 'what do you want in your park?' And we need to make it really open to them in the sense that we let them create anything they can think of,” she says.

Ramirez says the public has to think of two new features it wants to see in the park and how it wants those features designed. The grant application is due March 1. The city will hold the first of two public meetings to gather ideas tomorrow night. City employees will also be approaching people in the park to get more input.
