Now that the South Bay Power Plant in Chula Vista is headed for demolition, the land will be used for development. But it won't the home for a new San Diego Chargers stadium.
Dynegy, Inc. operates the South Bay Power Plant on land leased from the Port of San Diego. The Port bought the 115 acre site in 1999.
The Port expects the power plant to stop operating at the end of this year.
Marguerite Elicone with the Port said the tear down of the plant won't happen until 2012 after an environmental review.
She said once the power plant is gone, the land will be part of a 550 acre bayfront redevelopment plan.
"The Chula Vista Bayfront Master Plan includes a mix of development which would be commercial, retail, open space, park land, recreational use and some residential use," said Elicone.
Gaylord Entertainment proposed building a resort and convention center along the same area but pulled out in 2007 when it couldn't reach an agreement with local unions.
Elicone said the Port hasn't heard from Gaylord.
"We really don't have any names right now to announce," said Elicone. "We still include in the bayfront master plan a convention-type hotel and development."
Elicone said the plan does not include a football stadium.
A 2007 study identified two locations in Chula Vista, including the bayfront, as possible sites for a new San Diego Chargers stadium.
Elicone said the Port will ask the California Coastal Commission to approve changes the the Chula Vista Bayfront Master Plan in 2011.
