Construction is under way on the first of two projects at San Diego State University to replace the Aztec Center student union, the school announced today.
The first project is a 950-square-foot structure that will house ticketing and security for the Open Air Theater, the summer concert stage near Love Library.
Next up will be the Aztec Center project, which is scheduled to break ground in June.
"Our vision for a state-of-the-art student union that sets a precedent in green building is on its way to being a reality," said Associated Students President Grant Mack."
The projects are being paid for by a student-approved fee increase.
Many offices normally located in Aztec Center have moved to temporary quarters, or are preparing to do so, according to the school.
The new student union will be nearly 201,000 square feet, double its size, and will house recreation facilities, meeting space, study lounges, three new dining rooms, a convenience store, and banking and travel offices.
