Three San Diego Schools Among Best Colleges For Surfers

Point Loma Nazarene University, San Diego State University and UC San Diego were named three of the best colleges for surfers this week in Surfer Magazine.

PLNU was listed as best for "Want to Surf Between Classes.'' The magazine noted the dormitories are the closest in the area to the beach, which has "world-class'' waves.

"It doesn't get much better than checking the waves on the way to class and having dorms overlooking great waves,'' alumnus Rick Irons told the magazine. "As long as you respect the local crew, PLNU can be one of the best

places to get an education and surf some classic waves. The hard part is just

making yourself go to class everyday and not cut school to surf.''

SDSU was singled out for having a complete college experience as the oldest and largest of the city's universities, and being reasonably close to surf in San Diego and Mexico.

UCSD was picked in a category titled "Want to Be One with Mother Ocean.''

The La Jolla school's strong points are being the home of the Scripps Institution of Oceanography and overlooking Black's Beach, according to the magazine.

"UCSD is the best school to be a surfer because it's the perfect cover- up,'' alumnus Evan Slater said. "People take you seriously because you're going to a `smart' school. In the meantime, you get to learn Black's most intimate curves for at least four years.''

UCSD recently ponied up more than $500,000 to resume year-round lifeguard service at Black's Beach.
