San Diego Unified Board of Education trustees voted 3 to 2 Tuesday afternoon to postpone hearing the details of the district proposed 2011-12 budget. Those who supported the delay said they were hoping state legislators will meet Wednesday's budget deadline.
San Diego Unified staff members have been drafting a budget for the coming school year based on the proposed state budget Gov. Jerry Brown presented in May.
Schools Superintendent Bill Kowba asked trustees to delay hearing a presentation on the district budget in order to see whether the legislature passes Brown’s proposal. The governor has been looking unsuccessfully for four Republicans to agree to temporary tax extensions to balance the budget.
Browns version of the budget would add about $32 million to San Diego Unified’s funding next year. Some board members are hoping to use that bump to restore arts and music programs and recall some of the more than 2,200 employees who received layoff notices earlier this year.
