The California state budget is getting hit by two separate lawsuits – including one from school districts and superintendents for $2 billion.
Bob Wells with the Association of California School Administrators said he understands the financial crunch facing the state.
“But it’s still wrong to cut schools disproportionately to other programs in the budget, and it is still wrong to cut us further than what Prop 98 automatically cuts us when revenues go down,” said Wells.
The other suit is far smaller – about $100 million. It was filed by advocates for Californians with developmental disabilities. They argued the state is violating federal law by failing to fund support services adequately.
Both suits were filed Wednesday. The governor’s Department of Finance said the budget won’t take any immediate hits while the cases are argued. The department also said it believes the state is on solid legal ground when it comes to defending the budget in court.
