San Diego county's number of confirmed swine flu cases has increased to 98. KPBS Reporter Tom Fudge has the latest news on the flu for our region.
Fear of swine flu may have died down, but the cases are still piling up. San Diego had the nation's first confirmed case of the novel flu virus. The county health department now reports nearly a hundred confirmed cases, with 48 cases considered probable. There are currently no local school closings due to swine flu. Dr. Wilma Wooten is the San Diego County Health Officer. She says she would have to see 30 percent absenteeism, at a school, before she'd recommend its closure.
"Among students in the k-12, that's the strategy we're employing," she said. "Certainly you'd have to consider absenteeism of teachers as well."
Until recently, the county would consider closing a school if it had one confirmed case of swine flu. Nationwide, there are about 33 hundred confirmed cases of the H1N1 virus. Three deaths are linked to the illness.
