36 ninth graders and seven adult chaperones from a Carlsbad private school are being held in quarantine in China. School officials say seven in the group have tested positive for swine flu.
School officials say three students started getting sick during a river cruise last week. The group is on an educational trip to China.
Nine students and two teachers are now hospitalized in the town of Yichang. Chinese authorities have put the others in quarantine in a local hotel.
Eileen Mullady heads up the Pacific Ridge School in Carlsbad.
"What we do not know at this point is exactly when our students and teachers will be returning home," Mullady say. "We could have students out of quarantine by the end of the week."
Mullady says students and teachers have been talking frequently with their families by phone. She says those in China report everyone is in fine spirits and are being treated well.
