UCSD researchers will take part in a clinical trial designed to develop new drugs for women with fast-growing breast cancers. One of the goals is to speed up the drug development process.
The trial will use genetic markers from individual patients' tumors to screen new treatments. This will enable researchers to identify which therapies are most effective for a particular type of patient.
Dr. Anne Wallace directs the UCSD Moores Breast Cancer program. She says the trial may have some potential benefits for breast cancer patients right off the bat.
"There are very novel agents that may target our high risk women, our women that are dying of their cancer, and they cannot get these agents without being on a study like this," Wallace says.
The trial has been designed to allow drugs to be assessed much earlier in the process. It's hoped that will help streamline drug development.
