Supporters of organ and tissue donation in California are celebrating a national milestone and have set a new goal.
“Donate Life America” stated there are now one hundred million registered organ, eye and tissue donors in the United States. California has the most registered donors, with just over eight-point-six million.
Kyla Aquino is a two-time kidney recipient and spoke at an event Tuesday at DMV headquarters in Sacramento.
“I think it would help if community leaders were more involved,” said Aquino. “I know that’s usually the best way for me to get ears opened and eyes opened when it comes to this topic. No one wants to talk about death but it’s nice to talk about being a hero and saving lives.”
The one hundred million goal was set by donation and transplant groups in 2006. Now, national groups have set another goal to sign up twenty million new donors by the end of next year.
