A new survey finds increasing support among Californians for legalizing marijuana. According to the survey, more than half of California voters support legalizing the sale of marijuana,if it's controlled much the way alcohol currently is.
54 percent of Californians approve of the idea, and 43 percent are opposed. That's the highest level of support for legalized recreational marijuana since the Field Poll began asking about it in 1969. Back then, only 13 percent were in favor.
The survey also finds more than seven in 10 voters back the state's existing medical marijuana law - and nearly 60 percent of voters say they'd favor allowing medical marijuana dispensaries to operate in their city or town.
The Field Poll was conducted earlier this month.
