One day after the worst attack against Shiites in months, the dean of Al-Mustansiriya University tries to get the school back on its feet by offering to pay for medical care for the injured students. But at least one professor at the university said the attack was deserved, because the school has become stridently religious.
Pictures of Shiite leaders, especially Moqtada al-Sadr, hang from the walls, and a black flag — a symbol of Sadr's Mehdi Army — flies above the school's main clock tower.
In fact, the Medhi Army supplies security guards for the dean and many others. Sunni students are no longer encouraged to apply.
The Shiite extremism at the university has provoked Sunnis, Baathists, and terrorists against the students and teachers many times before.
