Chirac's Plans Are in the Air; So Is the Presidency

As France prepares to elect a new president this year, there is much speculation over President Jacques Chirac, 74, who may step down after 12 years in power. Just three and a half months away from April's presidential poll, Chirac refuses to say whether he is running.

The specter of another Chirac candidacy has set tongues wagging in political circles and thrown a wrench into the campaign of Chirac's one-time protégé, Nicholas Sarkozy.
