Iraqi Cleric's Timetable Petition Gains Support

Supporters of radical Shiite cleric Muqtada al-Sadr are circulating a petition demanding that the Baghdad government seek a timetable from Washington — something that, at the moment, Democrats on Capitol Hill are promoting, as well.

So far, slightly more than half of Iraq's 275 parliament members have signed the petition.

They include Shiites, Sunnis and Kurds. But there's more to the document than just a call for U.S. forces to withdraw.

The petition also demands that Baghdad clarify how long it will be before Iraqi forces are ready to take over security duties. Kurdish lawmakers are upset that Sadr's bloc has not publicized that particular aspect of the petition.
