Sharif Plans to Challenge Pakistan's Musharraf

A key ally in the U.S. war on terror is at a crossroads.

Pakistan has been ruled by President Gen. Pervez Musharraf since 1999.

Musharraf overthrew Nawaz Sarif in a bloodless coup eight years ago. Since then, Musharraf has kept Pakistan under military rule.

Sharif has been living in exile ever since. But this past week, he won a significant victory. Pakistan's Supreme Court ruled that Sharif can return to the country.

Sharif says he will return to Pakistan as soon as possible. He says he plans to restore the rule of law and the sanctity of parliament in Pakistan.

Sharif says he wants to restore true democracy to Pakistan and plans to continue good relations with the United States if he again becomes prime minister.
