With Musharraf Away, Opposition Grows in Pakistan

President Pervez Musharraf is in Europe this week, trying to shore up international support for his regime as Pakistan teeters toward political chaos.

Musharraf's popularity has slumped ahead of a general election next month in which his political allies are expected to fare poorly.

Speaking Monday in Brussels, Musharraf sounded defensive, accusing the West of having an "obession with human rights and democracy." On Tuesday, a group of retired Pakistani military officers called for Musharraf to step down as president.
