There's strange news out of Turkmenistan. According to a news Web site there, a recent TV news broadcast was visited by a cockroach. The bug lapped the host's desk and was not noticed on the broadcast until the next morning.
The Web site, Kronika Turkmenistan, says the country's president — when he heard what happened — fired 30 people from the main state news channel.
NPR's efforts to independently confirm the story have not succeeded, but Melissa Block explains anyway.
