On Saturday April 28, the San Diego Shakespeare Society will hold its 7th Annual San Diego Student Shakespeare Festival in Balboa Park from noon to 4 p.m.
The San Diego Shakespeare Society is a nonprofit organization with a passion for the Bard. In 2006, they launched a dream project.
Inspired by a festival in Denver, the San Diego Shakespeare Society decided to stage its first San Diego Student Shakespeare Festival. The goal was to go into the schools and encourage teachers and students to participate in an event that would showcases students from kindergarten to seniors in high school performing ten-minute scenes from Shakespeare's plays or sonnets.
The event draws hundreds of students who last year performed on five outdoor stages in the Casa Del Prado area of Balboa Park. The Shakespeare Society provides support to schools by offering workshops to prepare scenes and by having volunteers come to classrooms to provide feedback on performances. The Society is an advocate for teaching Shakespeare in the schools because studies have shown that early exposure to Shakespeare can improve academic performance.
