On National Voter Registration day, California is celebrating some new laws that will make it easier to register and cast a vote.
Brown signed the same-day voter registration bill, AB 1436, allowing voters to register on Election Day.
He also signed SB1001 to double to $100 the annual registration fee paid by lobbyists and require a $50-a-year fee for political committees that support candidates or causes.
Brown said California's efforts to increase voter rolls is in stark contrast to efforts in several states to purge their lists of voters and establish voter ID laws.
Lori Shellenberger, a voter rights attorney with the ACLU, said the same-day voter registration bill does not go into effect immediately. There is still a voter registration deadline this year of Oct. 22.
Deborah Seiler, the San Diego County Registrar of Voters, said 1.5 million voters are registered in San Diego County, which is about 70 percent of those eligible.
She said turnout in November elections is always higher than in primaries, particularly during presidential elections.
