Here in San Diego, we've heard a lot about drones. There's the effort to make San Diego a hub in drone production. We've heard about drones patrolling at the border, drones being used by the military, flying drones as a hobby.
One of the most recent uses of drone footage was captured by a man who flew a drone around that building in East Harlem, New York just minutes after the gas explosion that brought it down. He was told by police to bring the drone down.
But we haven't heard much about drones, also called unmanned aerial vehicles, or UAVs, used in journalism.
A University in Nebraska is pioneering that field, discovering how drones can help report the news. Pulitizer Prize winning journalist Matt Waite founded the Drone Journalism Lab at the University of Nebraska, Lincoln in 2011 to explore how drones could be used to report stories.
Waite will be speaking about drones and journalism and conducting a drone demonstration, at San Diego State University on March 25 from 11 a.m. to noon.
