The controversy surrounding "Empire" actor Jussie Smollett, who was arrested and charged last week for filing a false police report in connection to being attacked on the street, has made its way to San Diego.
The San Diego Union-Tribune editorial cartoonist Steve Breen published a cartoon Friday with images of renowned African American writers James Baldwin and Toni Morrison next to Smullett with the caption, “Famous African-American Storytellers.” The cartoon drew swift rebuke from community members.
In a letter to the U-T, the San Diego chapter of the National Association of Black Journalists wrote the cartoon was inflammatory and demeaning to Baldwin and Morrison.
The newspaper removed it from its website, issued an apology and this week Breen sat down with community members from various backgrounds to find ways to both represent and write the stories of African Americans with fairness and accuracy.
Breen joins Midday Edition Thursday to talk about changes the Union-Tribune is making in response to the incident.
