A new book by journalist and author James Verini chronicles the long and complicated history of America's presence in Iraq.
“They Will Have To Die Now: Mosul and the Fall of the Caliphate” examines the battle of Mosul, which the Pentagon called “the most significant urban combat since WWII.”
Verini also explores U.S. involvement in the region and how that brought about the terrorist group known as Islamic State. The group is making headlines this week after President Trump announced a withdrawal of U.S. troops from Syria-Turkey border.
Verini, who spent nearly a year on the ground reporting from Mosul, joined Midday Edition to discuss his new book.
