Neither the Navy nor the Air Force nor anyone from The Pentagon apparently knows exactly what created a vapor trail that crossed the skies 35 miles off the Southern California coast and resembled a missile launch (video below). "Nobody within the Department of Defense has been able to explain what this contrail is, where it came from," Pentagon spokesman Col. Dave Lapan said in a statement. But one blogger from contrailscience.com thinks it's simply a jet contrail, which can look like a missile trail:
