Big news coming out of the White House this morning. The Associated Press is reporting that the United States plans "to impose unilateral sanctions on Libya in response to violence there." White House spokesman Jay Carney announced the decision just moments ago at a press briefing. No specifics so far on what those sanctions will be.
As the unrest continues in Libya, the United States and our allies are meeting to figure out what the heck to do. There's a special session going on in Geneva right now of the United Nation's Human Rights Council. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton is attending as a representative of the U.S. The latest news to come out of that meeting is that the Libyan delegation for the U.N. announced that it was switching sides to support the opposition movement, according to the Voice of America:
Reuters reports that the Human Rights Council also passed a resolution condemning the violence in Libya and is launching an investigation into alleged atrocities committed by the Libyan government against its own people.
In addition, members of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) held an emergency meeting today. The Los Angeles Times covered this one:
