Breaking News: Supreme Court Decides in Favor of Military Funeral Protesters

This decision is sure to spark loads of controversy. The Associated Press reports that the U.S. Supreme Court just ruled in favor of those infamous parishioners at the Westboro Baptist Church who picket the funerals of servicemembers with signs like "Thank God for dead soldiers." The Westboro yokels believe God is punishing the United States and its military with the wars in the Middle East because our country "tolerates" gays and lesbians.

The court's ruling was almost unanimous, at 8-1 (Judge Alito dissented), with Chief Justice John Roberts writing:

The case was brought by the father of Matthew Snyder, who was killed in 2006 in Iraq, and whose funeral was picketed by the Westboro Baptist Church. By the way, according to the A.P., the church is really just a guy named Fred Phelps and his family.

It's my own personal opinion that the protection of free speech, even that which disgusts us, is what makes our country the standard for democracy the world over. I would really like to hear from Home Post readers on what you think of the Supreme Court's decision.
