Love it or hate it, it's officially over. The repeal of Don't Ask, Don't Tell took effect at midnight (on the east coast) but some military folks here marked the occasion when the clock struck 12 in the Pacific Time Zone.
Don't Ask, Don't Tell took effect during the Clinton Presidency way back in 1993. The law banned gays and lesbians from serving openly in the military. Now, according to Army Maj. Gen. Gary S. Patton, the shoe is on the other foot:
“Statements about sexual orientation will no longer be a bar to enlisting in the military or a cause for dismissal.”
