Unclear Whether West Coast Marine Units Will Face Cuts

There's confusion today surrounding which Marine units may face the chopping block, after comments made yesterday by Lt. Gen. Dennis Hejlik, commander of Marine Corps Forces Command in Norfolk, Virginia. Hejlik told the Marine Times and other reporters that Marine officials are considering eliminating at least one more infantry battalion:

The Marine Times points out that there are active-duty light armored reconnaissance (LAR) units based at Camp Pendleton and Twentynine Palms. Hejlik didn't indicate to reporters which of these battalions could get slashed - if any.

However, San Diego County-based Congressman Duncan Hunter Jr. (a former Marine) is confident west coast Marines units are safe from the budget ax. Hunter spokesman Joe Kasper told the MC Times:
