Detroit Teachers Maintain Strike on Salary Issue

Students in Detroit start classes next week, after Labor Day. There is some question, though, whether there will be teachers at their schools to greet them. The Detroit teachers, currently on strike, were scheduled to report for work on Monday.

With less than a week before school is set to begin for the city's 119,000 students, the two sides remain far apart.

Teachers in Detroit are in their third consecutive day of labor negotiations with the city. Classes don't start until after Labor Day, but the two sides are not close to a compromise. The city wants to cut teachers' salaries by 5 percent; the union is demanding a raise.
