Meehan Awaits Chance to Review War Effort

The new Democratic majority in Congress means the Bush administration's conduct of the war in Iraq will face new oversight. Rep. Marty Meehan (D-MA) is expected to head an investigative House sub-committee that will investigate war policy, past and future.

Meehan expressed confidence in Lt. Gen. David Petraeus, named by President Bush as the new commander of U.S. forces in Iraq. But in an interview with Debbie Elliott, Meehan said one of his priorities is to find out why so many Americans are still on the front lines of the conflict. He also hopes to make sure American troops have better equipment to protect them from the dangers of serving in Iraq.

Meehan said he has not decided if the panel might call former Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld to hear what he has to say about Iraq policy.
