A new BBC World Service poll asked more than 26,000 people across 25 countries about the U.S. role in world affairs. Steven Kull, co-designer of the poll, says that global opinions of the U.S. have deteriorated, and that many of those polled describe U.S. actions as hypocritical.
Speaking to Melissa Block, Kull describes how people responded to America's role in six different foreign policy areas: the Iraq war, the handling of Guantanamo detainees, the Israel-Hezbollah conflict, Iran's nuclear program, global warming, and North Korea's nuclear program.
"People around the world have a positive view of the values the United States has tried to promote," Kull says, "so when people see the United States as departing from those principles, they get very frustrated."
Kull is the director of the University of Maryland's Program on International Policy Attitudes.
