Illinois Democrats Spar Over Spending Plan

Squabbles over state spending plans usually break down along party lines — as in Pennsylvania, where a budget fight between the Democratic governor and Republican lawmakers has shut down parts of the government.

But in Illinois, Democrats are fighting Democrats, in a name-calling, finger-pointing stalemate over the state budget.

In Springfield, the acrimony between the state's Democratic Gov. Rod Blagojevich, and the Democratic-controlled legislature is intense.

The governor has called lawmakers into a special session in an effort to break an impasse over a multi-billion-dollar budget, but the fight between Democrats began long ago, when Blagojevich announced he would not live in the state capital, but instead fly back home to Chicago — at taxpayer expense.
