Labor Day has traditionally marked the start of the campaign season in Iowa. This election cycle, however, campaigning started a year earlier.
John McCain began the day in central Iowa, calling for more drug enforcement along United States borders, while Hillary Clinton courted labor activists in Sioux City.
Meanwhile, in Pittsburgh, John Edwards won the support of United Steelworkers and the United Mine Workers of America before flying on to Iowa.
