The Del Mar Fairgrounds is trying to marshal opposition to a bill that’s been introduced by State Senator Christine Kehoe.
Kehoe’s bill would designate the land between the fairgrounds and the San Dieguito River as a greenbelt. It would be about a mile long and would have to be at least 100 feet wide.
But Fairground officials say the master plan already calls for a greenbelt in that area and say Kehoe’s bill would have a negative economic impact on the fairgrounds. They’re asking the agriculture community to write letters in opposition to the bill.
The goal is to kill the legislation when it goes to committee in early April.
The fairgrounds master plan calls for new exhibit halls and a hotel in the area bordering the river. The plan is currently under review.
On her website, Kehoe says she has concerns about the plan’s environmental impacts. The two sides have been unable to reach a compromise on Kehoe’s proposed legislation.
